Several grids allowing students to write about themselves

Objective:
First week back at school, class teachers often focus on the theme “myself” just to get the ball rolling.

Activity Outline:
All the class were given a worksheet which they had to complete by the end of the week. Students had to fill in short phrases under the following topics:

• Favourite sports/hobbies
• Most terrifying moment
• Favourite friend (and why!)
• Happiest day
• Most embarrassing/funniest moment
• Favourite singer/actor
• Fantasy holiday destination
• Favourite car
• What I hope to be
• What I expect from this year

The activity was modified for several students in the class with physical impairment (cerebral palsy), both of whom use joysticks as a means of mouse access. Neither use the keyboard for writing.

Teacher aides discussed with students their answers orally on the first day. Clicker grids were then created based on their answers plus other options from which they could choose.

Students during their next writing session typed out short phrases to cut and paste onto their worksheet.

Materials/Equipment:

• IBM computer + printer
• Mouse or mouse alternative (trackball/joystick)
• Clicker 4 software
