Scanning Terms Explained
Automatic single switch scan
The options are highlighted automatically in turn. Press when it reaches the desired item. Timing skills, i.e. pressing the switch at the right time, are essential. Scan4 and FL4SH have realistically slow scanning speeds for beginners.
Single switch step or dwell scan
Useful for people who can manage repeated movements, but struggle to use two switches. Press the switch to move the scan highlight along and then ‘dwell’ or pause to activate the message.
Two switch scan
For those who can activate two switches. Press one switch to move the scan highlight and press the second when it reaches the desired button. This provides the user with good control but some can find it tiring.
