Speech-Generating Devices : Will they stop my child from talking?
by Amanda Hartmann
At the recent National Biennial Autism Conference (March 14-16, 2007), Amanda Hartmann, one of our Speech-Language Pathologist, presented a paper on Speech-Generating Devices – Will they stop my child from talking?
Abstract of Paper:
A Speech-Generating Device is an electronic device that can provide the voice for a person with little or no speech. With the press of a button or bang of a switch, they can communicate their needs, wants, opinions, feelings and even have a chat! But will using a Speech-Generating Device stop a child from learning to speak? In fact, the opposite is true! Recent research supports the idea that using Speech-Generating Devices will encourage and support speech, expressive language development and in some cases, literacy development. Some of the latest communication devices will be demonstrated during this presentation.
