Ziko World from Inclusive Technology

Ziko World is a new switch software package from Inclusive Technology. It caters to older students and to adults with intellectual disabilities. It is based on a game format with five fun activities. High interest, vibrant colours and plenty of ‘action’ it is undoubtedly a winner! Ziko can be played using a mouse, trackball, single switch or with two switches, a touch screen or with a membrane keyboard. It will work automatically with an IntelliKeys connected. It will also operate using a Concept Keyboard. As a hybrid CD-ROM, Ziko World can be run on either a Macintosh or PC compatible computer running Windows 3.1, 95 or 98.

Alien Attack!

Ziko is an alien. He has crash-landed his spaceship on a desert island. The user has to rescue him from the island, help him rebuild his craft and refuel the spaceship. Whilst he is visiting, he can have some earth-type fun before blasting off back home to his own planet. The software is designed to help in developing the switch skills, particularly in timing, anticipation, moving an object up, down, left and right, planning strategies and hitting a target.

The software is packaged in an A5 sized hard cover folder, with a useful eight- (8) page A5 sized user manual that provides clear instructions and illustrations. You can elect to run the switch software from your CD-ROM drive or install it to your hard drive. On an MS Windows computer, it will require just less than 18Mb of disk space. The program installs in to C:inclusive directory and creates a short cut in the Inclusive shortcut folder. [HINT: To place a copy of the short cut onto your desktop, simply click o the icon with your right mouse button. Then select Send To, and choose the Desktop (create shortcut) option.] If you run it directly from the CD-ROM, it only needs 1.5Mb. On a Macintosh computer, it will require 5.6 MB of disk space to be completely installed. Installation is quick and easily performed on both computer platforms. The instructions in the manual are well written and easy to follow with illustrations to guide you through using the program.

Switch Fun!

Ziko World has been designed for learners who wish or need to use switches to access their computer. Switch users usually require a range of software in order to accommodate their skills and sufficiently motivate them to master their switching skills, speed and accuracy. Computer software provides a perfect vehicle and mechanism for switch practice. The relative independence affords users time and opportunity to become proficient and confident users of their device. Ziko World provides an entertaining and enjoyable set of experiences to direct and motivate children and adults. Ziko World was developed to assist switch users in developing their ability to use switches through a fun game format. You can use a single switch or use two switches; great for playing with a friend, peer, and sibling or in an inclusive setting with another student. Other access devices can be used. The Don Johnson switch box can be used with Ziko on either Mac or PC platforms. IntelliKeys can be used as two large switches (using the board’s surface with an overlay) or via the two switch ports.

Switch Me Up, Scottie!

There are five games. They include:

Rescue:You press the switch to guide the helicopter through the clouds to the island to rescue the stranded Ziko.
Target:Use targeting skills to select components in order to rebuild Ziko’s spaceship.
Pleasuredome:Improve recreation time! Guide him through the pleasuredome, pausing to dance and enjoy his ‘earth time’.
Refuel:You guide Ziko to refuel the new spaceship.
Take-off:Navigate the various lifts to the top of the gantry. He can set off for home… and new adventures!

There is an introductory Menu Screen. Each game can be turned on or off at any time. You can elect to have sound effects and music playing or silent. In a busy classroom, or area at home, the use of headphones might be an option for quiet or private listening enjoyment! If you select IntelliKeys, an overlay will be sent directly to the board (if it is connected). Serial switches may be used on a PC compatible. You need to nominate the appropriate COM port i.e. communications port, numbered 1-4. Usually, it is COM 2. On a Macintosh, the switch settings used are [Space] and [Return] keys. If you are using a Mouser, you are using the two mouse buttons (left and right), so you DO NOT choose Serial Switches option. If you are using a Concept Keyboard, you will need to create and send an appropriate overlay. If using a keyboard, simply use [Space] and [Enter] keys. Ziko is out of this world – for switch users and those who enjoy an entertaining arcade style game!
