Funding support for people with disabilities or learning
difficulties to attend

We were, once again, successful in applying for National
Disability Conference Program
[http://www.fahcsia.gov.au/sa/disability/funding/disabilityconference/Pages/default2.aspx]
funding from the Australian Government's Department of Families,
Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. This generous
funding allows us to offer financial support to assist with the
costs of attending the 2010 Conference for six people with
disabilities, carers for people with disabilities or parents of
people with disabilities. People with learning difficulties or
parents of students with learning difficulties are also eligible
to apply. More details about the support offered and online
applications for the funding are now open in the Funding section

Conference website.

Please encourage all who you feel would benefit from attending
the conference to apply. Applications close Wednesday 17th
February 2010.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
WriteOnline: Online writing support for upper primary and
secondary school students
-----------------------------------------------------------------

WriteOnline [http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/writeonline]
is a new concept - offering an online writing support tool which
allows students the option to access their work from school,
home, anywhere! It has been developed by Crick Software as a
logical progression for older students who are ready to move on
from using Clicker 5
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/clicker-5-anz-australiannew-zealand-version-2]
as their writing support tool. Clever features built into
WriteOnline include:

* Integrated Wordbar
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/30045/popup] for
word banks and writing frames to support writing - with the
option to automatically create Wordbars by cutting and
pasting text from Internet pages or other documents!

* Integrated word prediction supportive of phonetic spellers -
for use while writing or for when checking text after writing is
complete

* Text-to-speech support within all documents, word prediction
and Wordbars

* Integration with Moodle

* Doesn't depend on an Internet connection while it's running -
it uses the power of your own computer, so it's just as
responsive as an installed application

* Switch access available for students with physical disabilities

* Works offline too! (When you first run WriteOnline on any
computer, it invisibly caches the program on your computer and
puts a shortcut on your desktop. You can start WriteOnline from
this shortcut even if you have no Internet connection, as long as
you have logged into the program within the past three days. So
you get the best of both worlds - work anytime, anywhere, even
when there's no Internet connection!)

For more information about WriteOnline subscriptions visit
Spectronics' website
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/writeonline] and view
the online video
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/downloads/video/writeonline/wol_video.htm]
outlining the main features of the program.

Note that WriteOnline subscriptions are now available for
individual single users as well as for Primary and Secondary
School Site Licences. Spectronics is also now able to set up a
30-day trial of the program for you and your IT team to fully
evaluate how well it will work for you school! To arrange for a
30-day trial to be set up - just email Karl Francois
[karlf@spectronicsinoz.com], Spectronics' Sales Support Manager,
or phone Karl on (07) 3808 6833 to discuss options.

At Spectronics, we think this is a very clever concept and a
logical progression along the writing continuum for Clicker
users. Others think so too! Click below
[http://www.connsensebulletin.com/WOLrevmk.html] to read a
recent review by ConnSENSE (Connecticut's Special Education
Network for Software Evaluation).

-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Mac is back!
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Over the past two years, we have noticed a marked increase in
the number of Apple Mac related enquiries coming in to
Spectronics' advisory, training and technical support teams. So
it may be of interest to you to be aware of a couple of new
text-to-speech programs now available for the Mac platform.

* GhostReader [http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/ghostreader]
with the Infovox iVox
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/infovox-ivox] high
quality voices for Mac

This simple-to-use program allows you to have the content of
Text, Word, HTML (Web pages), PDF and RTF documents read aloud.
You can also convert text to audio files or iTunes tracks - for
playback on your iPod or other MP3 player. To hear samples of the
Infovox iVox voices in action - visit the Spectronics website
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/ghostreader]. Click below
to view videos
[http://www.convenienceware.com/ghostreader/videos.php] of
GhostReader in action and click below to download a 15-day
Trial Version [http://www.convenienceware.com/download.php] of
the program.

* Texthelp Read&Write 3 GOLD for Mac

This newly released version of Read&Write GOLD for Mac now looks
and feels much more like the popular Windows version - using the
floating toolbar to offer text-to-speech features directly within
Microsoft Word for MAC 2008, Safari and Acrobat Reader for PDF
files. It also offers OCR (optical character recognition)
scanning to convert printed documents to onscreen files which
are able to be read aloud and a host of other reading, writing
and study support tools. More information is available on the
Spectronics website
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/texthelp-readwrite-3-gold-for-mac].
If you would like to be sent a 30-Day Demo CD and information
pack contact Spectronics
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/contact] and we will be happy to
post one to you.

* ClaroRead for Mac V4

Also newly released for 2009, this version of ClaroRead for Mac
offers text-to-speech output for many file formats on the Mac,
and like Texthelp Read&Write GOLD, also includes OCR scanning and
a range of reading, writing and study support tools. Videos
highlighting each of these features are viewable on the
Spectronics website and a trial version of the program is
downloadable from the Claro Software
website [http://www.shareit.com/demoreg.html].

In recognition of this growing interest in all-things-Mac, we
have negotiated to have a lab of Apple Mac laptops with iPods in
place at our Inclusive Learning Technologies Conference
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/conference/] in May next year -
to allow our delegates to experience these and a range of other
new Mac programs in hands-on workshops.

If you would like more advice about any of these programs or
guidance on choosing which might best meet your needs, our
advisory team is happy to assist. Feel free to contact
Spectronics' Educational Technology Consultants by phone on (07)
3808 6833 or email Greg O'Connor [grego@spectronicsinoz.com] or
Natalie Clarke [nataliec@spectronicsinoz.com] directly with your
questions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Change of plan on Proloquo2Go - Communication to go on an iPod
-----------------------------------------------------------------

As you may already know, and as we announced in our last
Spectronics emailed newsletter
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/emailupdate/spectronics-email-update-2nd-july-2009#9D2D961682B4D58C],
Proloquo2Go [http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/proloquo2go]
is an exciting new AAC concept for use on the Apple iPhone or
iPod Touch!

For the past few months, the Spectronics team has been working
hard on configuring several flexible options for delivery of
Proloquo2Go packages to users across Australia and New Zealand -
ensuring that we are able to support you at the level you have
come to expect from Spectronics. However, due to restrictions
with the software being distributed through the Apple iTunes
Store [http://www.apple.com/accessibility/resources/iphone.html],
we are unable to provide you with a CD of the software and have
been required to ask our customers to use iTunes gift cards or
to download a pre-purchased version from the iTunes store.
Following feedback from a number of funding organisations that
this is unacceptable and negative feedback about the complexity
of supplying the software in this way, we have decided to stop
supplying Proloquo2Go. We are extremely disappointed about this
as we are very much aware of how fabulous this software package
is - but we are happy to tell you that you will still be able
to purchase it directly through the iTunes store yourself. We
will continue to provide accessories for the iPod touch such as
the iMainGo2 speakers and the Pogo Stylus
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/pogo-stylus]. We will
also continue to provide information about Proloquo2Go on our
website.

If you have any questions at all about this please email Jane
Farrall [janef@spectronicsinoz.com], our AAC Support Services
Manager on janef@spectronicsinoz.com [janef@spectronicsinoz.com]

-----------------------------------------------------------------
BigMouth Camp: Christmas in June in the hills of Victoria
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The Big Mouth Camp
[http://www.bigmouthcamp.org.au/Big_Mouth_Camp/Welcome.html] is a
residential camp for school-aged children using speech generating
devices and for their families and carers. The primary aim of the
camp is for children using the devices to improve their device
use and become much more competent communicators in a fun and
relaxing atmosphere. Big Mouth Camp for 2009 has just finished -
and being held in the foothills of Great Dividing Range in
mid-winter suited their "White Christmas"perfectly. Jane
Farrall, Spectronics' AAC Support Services Manager, coordinates
the camp each year - and has now posted some lovely photos from
the camp up onto the Big Mouth Camp website
[http://www.bigmouthcamp.org.au/Big_Mouth_Camp/Welcome.html].

Below are a few comments from Charlene Cullen, who joined Jane
and Katie Lyon representing the Spectronics Speechies at the camp
this year.

"This was my second year at BMC. Again, it was an experience I
will never forget and one I will always treasure. We arrived on
Friday and unpacked the truck with all the activities and
equipment for the next 5 days. I had a group of three girls and
one boy who all had cerebral palsy. They all had wheelchairs but
some of them used walkers or walked independently for short
distances. They were aged between 5-8 years. It would be fair to
say that the kids melted our hearts. They were little legends
with their devices and had the best smiles and laughs. One little
boy was also a Richmond Tigers supporter like me.

It's really hard to put into words what the experience is like. I
just loved hanging out with the kids and communicating with them
and their families. Some fond memories I will treasure:

* one little girl learning my name VERY quickly and calling me
and grabbing my hand
* another teen kissing my hand when we said our farewells
* high fives with the young man in our group
* imaginary kicking the footy around on the oval with the
Richmond fan
* someone joking with me about my name and writing "cha-grill"on
their device
* hugs from parents as they left
* chats by the fire at night
* dancing on the disco floor with everyone
* laughs at the concert
* making Mexican Waves as we participated in the Boxing Day test
and trying to get some Barmy Army like chants going
* something that wasn't rain and some thought was snow, others
thought was sleet falling on the last day... whatever it was, I
hadn't seen anything like it - it was cool!"

-----------------------------------------------------------------
How do I see more pictures/symbols in Clicker 5?
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Clicker 5
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/clicker-5-anz-australiannew-zealand-version-2]
is a very popular writing support tool for primary school
students - and comes with over 2000 engaging pictures to support
and motivate younger students' writing. One of the most commonly
asked questions from Special Education settings however is, "My
students need more pictures to support their writing. Can I
import the Boardmaker symbols in Clicker 5?"

The short answer to this is that you used to be able to import
the Boardmaker symbols and have them appear in Clicker 5. This
was when the PCS symbols which appear in Boardmaker were
available to be purchased as separate image files (in Windows
Metafile format). They are no longer available from Spectronics
to purchase in this form. If you have Boardmaker only, there is
no way of linking the PCS symbols in there so that they
automatically appear in Clicker 5's grids and the Clicker Writer
document. These options are discussed in more detail under the
Clicker Help Sheets
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/article/graphics-libraries-pcs-symbols-animations-and-clicker-5-help-sheet#s20]
section of our website.

An alternative option is to set up the Widgit Literacy Symbols
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/20031/popup] to appear
automatically in Clicker 5. The Widgit Literacy Metafile
collection
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/widgit-literacy-metafile-collection]
is a set of over 7,500 vector drawn Widgit Literacy Symbols in
both colour and black-and-white, for use with Windows compatible
machines. Charlene Cullen [charlenec@spectronicsinoz.com], one of
Spectronics' team of Speech Pathologists, has just completed a
handy Help Sheet that shows you how to import the metafiles into
your Clicker picture library so that they automatically appear as
your student is writing or as you are building grids to support
their writing. Click below to download the Help Sheet (PDF)
or view it online on the Spectronics website
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/article/importing-widgit-literacy-symbols-into-clicker-5].

Oh by the way - we have just heard that free online collection of
ready-made grids for Clicker 5 at LearningGrids.com
[https://www.learninggrids.com/anz/WelcomePage.aspx] has just
topped over 100,000 registered users! A very popular and
time-saving resource for all Clicker 5 users - worth visiting
regularly!

-----------------------------------------------------------------
A one button mouse - how cool is that!
-----------------------------------------------------------------

We are often asked about ways of assisting younger students
learning to use the mouse - to avoid their confusion over using
the right and left mouse buttons. Inadvertently clicking on the
right mouse button can result in them opening up all sorts of
unwanted menus - ending up with your students landing in areas
of the computer you'd rather them not to be exploring! For this
reason, the Chester Mouse
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/chester-mouse] has been
very popular since we added it to the Spectronics website a few
months ago. It is a tiny single-button mouse with no scroll
wheel, that's easy to control, and does not offer a right mouse
button click at all.

Another option for "disabling"the right mouse button is to
look at a freeware program from AnyCom in Sweden. Click below
[http://www.anycom.se/archives/2005/07/find_the_right_1.html] to
view more details about the downloadable OneButton software
[http://www.anycom.se/archives/2005/07/find_the_right_1.html].
This neat little utility sits in your computer's System Tray and
is available for turning your right mouse button on and off.

These options are obviously also helpful for assisting students
who cannot isolate their index finger movement sufficiently to
click only one button.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Ginger Software - new contextual spelling and grammar checker!
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Every now and then a really innovative new software concept for
supporting struggling writers pops up. We think that Ginger
[http://www.gingersoftware.com/] fits into this category! It is
a clever contextual spelling and grammar checker which
automatically suggests corrections for even the most
phonetically spelled sentences! It works with sentences written
in Microsoft Word and in emails constructed within Microsoft
Outlook. Check it out for yourself on the Ginger Software

website [http://www.gingersoftware.com/] by typing in a sample
misspelled sentence and see how Ginger cleverly interprets the
intended content and will accurately suggest the correctly
spelled version with correct grammar. The other real bonus is
that students will be able to learn how to use it in less than
one minute! It is that simple to master. And is great for those
students who type too fast to interrupt their workflow by
watching and selecting from word prediction lists as they type.
Let them type out their ideas as they are flowing - then "Ginger?
the text to correct the errors after the work is complete.

Ginger will soon be available from Spectronics - in two
versions. Ginger Standard and Ginger Premium (which adds in
text-to-speech to assist with reading and comprehending the
suggested changes and creates individual progress reports for
each student using the program). Because of the size of the
database driving this clever program, users need to be online to
use Ginger - with licences available on an annual subscription
basis.

Download a trial version to evaluate the program for yourself
from the Ginger Software website
[http://www.gingersoftware.com/download]. And contact Karl
Francois [karlf@spectronicsinoz.com] at Spectronics if you would
like to be advised when Ginger is available from Spectronics.

Other useful stuff to know about!
-----------------------------------------------------------------

* Delicious - What is it??

Delicious [http://delicious.com/about] is a web-based social
bookmarking tool that allows you to store, categorise, share
and find website bookmarks. The Delicious website was founded in
2003 and now has over 5 million users bookmarking over 150
million websites!

It is free and easy-to-use for anyone with Internet access.
Start by signing up for your own Delicious account, and then you
can begin to bookmark your favourite websites. These bookmarks
are stored online and are available to you anytime, from any
computer connected to the web. As well, you can make them
available to your friends, colleagues or anyone else. And it
works in reverse! Your friends and colleagues can share their
bookmarks with you as well.

A comment follows from Jane Farrall, Spectronics' AAC Support
Services Manager, when we asked her, "Why do you love Delicious
Jane?"

"Delicious is one of my favourite Web 2.0 tools. It is
so versatile and allows me to do a range of things more
efficiently. Primarily, it allows me to share my bookmarks
easily with others. If someone asks me for my favourite
literacy resource websites or for some great switching websites
then I can quickly and easily point them to my Delicious
bookmarks. With more and more information available on the
web this is incredibly useful - and using tags to define
bookmarks in multiple ways so that I can find them more
easily is also very helpful. It is also useful for me
personally because I regularly use three different computers.
For the first time my home computer, work computer and
laptop have exactly the same bookmarks - yay! I also don't
have to worry about losing favourite bookmarks in a hard
drive crash ever again."

Check out Jane's links and those of other members of
the Spectronics team. They are also updated on the
Spectronics Blog [http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/blog/]
each time a new link is added. Very cool!

* Writing with Symbols 2000 discontinued 30th October 2009

Writing with Symbols
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/catalogue/writing-with-symbols-2000-3]
is now over ten years old! Widgit Software, developer of
the program, is not continuing to provide software and symbol
updates for the program and it will no longer be available
from Spectronics after 30th October 2009. Widgit is looking
to the future and has written two new replacement programs
- Communicate: InPrint
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/communicate-in-print-2-2]
and Communicate: SymWriter
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/product/communicate-symwriter].
Combined, these new programs offer all of the features of
Writing with Symbols and MUCH more. Upgrade costs
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/upgrade/symwriter] for existing
Writing with Symbols users can be calculated online
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/upgrade/symwriter] or contact
Spectronics [http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/contact] for advice.

* Word Prediction Comparison Chart - Updated for 2009

Word prediction is a tool built into several of the programs
sold and supported by Spectronics. To help you to quickly
compare the features of these programs, we have just
updated our Word Prediction comparison chart. View it
online
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/article/word-prediction-software-comparison-chart]
or download the PDF file
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/downloads/faqs/WordPredictionComparison.pdf].
Let us know if you find this helpful!

* AAC in the Classroom - Learning Considerations Handout

Check out this fabulous handout entitled "Augmentative
Communication and Classroom Learning Considerations
[http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/downloads/general/AAC-in-the-Classroom.pdf]?.
It has some really helpful guidelines for the integration
of speech generating devices into the classroom. Written
by Laura Yoder and Kathy Staugler, it offers excellent
suggestions for giving your speech generating device user
the best chance of success, starting with the physical
environment and then providing a framework for discussion of
roles and responsibilities. It takes you through a
classroom inventory and explains some great strategies.
Whether you are starting off from scratch with introducing
a speech generating device to the classroom, or whether you
just want to look at working through some challenges that have
come your way, this is a great resource.
