Adventures in Reading

by Learning Magic Inc

A collection of stories that allow the reader to become an active participant

The reader becomes an active participant in the stories in Adventures In Reading. Choices made by the reader actually determine the course and outcome. The collection includes a wide variety of finished stories, plus a template to create more stories.

Stories run on the IntelliTools Classroom Suite Player 3 (included). Creating new stories with the template and modifying stories require the full version of IntelliPics Studio 3 or IntelliTools Classroom Suite (v3 or higher). Stories are switch accessible and an IntelliKeys overlay is included.

Each story begins with a paragraph setting up the opening situation, and the page ends with two choices presented to the reader about what will happen next. The reader clicks one of two buttons to make a choice, and the story continues up to the next decision point. Starting from a single opening page, each story has eight different outcomes!

Students can read or hear the text read out. They can subsequently click on any text box to hear it read again. Depending upon the story, part of the story may be in the form of IntelliMation, or a movie may play. At the end of each of the eight story endings is a conclusion page. At this point the reader still has two choices: to quit for the day, or return to the beginning. Students typically want to go back many times, in order to explore all the possible story lines. They improve their reading skills while engaging in an enjoyable exercise.

In the finished stories provided, the contents vary from very simple stories, such as Henry’s Walk Along the Beach, to higher level stories with more advanced vocabulary, such as Aaron’s Woods Adventure. Some stories are simply fun narratives, including the Halloween Adventure and Space Adventure. Others present a rich body of factual content, such as the Zoo Adventure and Maggie’s Trip to the Desert.

When all the multimedia elements combine, the results are compelling. In the African Photo Safari, realistic sounds and spectacular photos and movies surprise and delight. Rather than simply reading about something, students experience the story as if they were actually exploring an exciting place with an informative guide.

A template is also included for making more stories using digital photos, movies and other forms of multi-media. The pages are already linked to lead to the eight outcomes, and are ready for the addition of the text. A Storyboard worksheet is also provided which makes it easy to compose the text for a story, possibly as a collaborative class effort. The tutorial explains in easy steps how to add pictures and text to the template. A teacher can use this versatile template to tailor a wide range of stories to the interests and abilities of his or her class.
