Conversation Skills Curriculum

by Attainment Company

Provide basic conversation skills to students with developmental disabilities and show them how to initiate social interactions

Conversation Skills and Conversation Skills II booksSample pages from the books: Conversation Skills and Conversation Skills IIThis curriculum features two books of lesson plans that teach students with developmental disabilities to initiate and maintain conversations on the job, at home and with friends in school. Developed and extensively tested by Dr Marilyn Banks, the Conversation Skills Curriculum consists of a sequence of structured, easy-to-implement lessons. Begin with Book 1 and move on later to the more advanced skills in Book II.

Book I – Conversation Skills: On the Job and in the Community

Non-disabled workers usually lose their jobs because of character issues, but workers with developmental disabilities often lose jobs and experience other social problems because of poor conversation skills and subsequent isolation. Conversation Skills, by speech and language therapist Dr. Marilyn Banks, covers basic and essential communication skills and helps young people enjoy successful job experiences and more fulfilling and independent social lives.

With 50-plus self-managed lessons, Conversation Skills is self-paced and takes only 12 weeks of bi-weekly, 10 minute training sessions during which students acquire a ready social repertoire. All materials in the book are reproducible.

Covered spiral bound book, 106 pgs, 2005. Includes a Win/Mac CD Classroom Licence with a printable PDF containing all the reproducibles in the book.

Book II – Conversation Skills II: Extending Conversations

The logical next step, Conversation Skills II teaches students how to remember names, develop friendships at work and in the community, and extend conversations beyond a one answer response. A new feature of this second book also by speech and language therapist Dr. Marilyn Banks is the ability to graph the progress of students in a form understandable to parents and teachers. The graphing of work related conversation will give you invaluable documentation of student IEP progress.

Covered spiral bound book, 125 pgs., 2008. Includes a Win/Mac CD Classroom Licence with a printable PDF containing all the reproducibles in the book.
