Use science to address many functional concepts and develop community and world awareness, while working on language and literacy within this curricular content.

Students will be introduced to the fictional community centring around “Main Street.” A different concept is addressed in each of 10 community locations. For each location students will:

  • Map It!
  • Read About It!
  • Learn It!
  • Practise It!
  • and Explore It!

The community science topics include:

  • weather (radio station)
  • food groups (grocery store)
  • planets (school)
  • your body (doctor)
  • dental health (dentist)
  • simple machines (construction site)
  • the environment (recycling centre)
  • zoo animals (zoo)
  • exercising (gym)
  • and plant growth (farm).

Main Street: Community Science includes print based activities for Boardmaker and onscreen activities for Boardmaker Plus! or Speaking Dynamically Pro.

Boardmaker activities include:

  • a book
  • an experiment on the topic
  • flash cards with vocabulary words
  • worksheets that help reinforce the concept and vocabulary
  • and a folder activity that reinforces the key concept.

Boardmaker Plus!/Speaking Dynamically Pro activities include:

  • an interactive book
  • a writing activity and experiment
  • an interactive dictionary
  • and a variety of interactive topic games and activities.
