Quarter Hour Watch
by Handitek AB
A time aid for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities
The Quarter Hour Watch lowers the level of abstraction to allow the use of “time” without needing to read a clock’s time.
The Quarter Hour Watch shows a visual representation of the time until an event starts (or ends in the timer mode).
The time remaining until an event starts is graphically displayed by dots (or, in the timer mode, the time remaining until an event ends). Each dot corresponds to a quarter of an hour.
In this manner the Quarter Hour Watch helps an individual to understand the concept of time passing.
If the remaining time until an event starts is two hours or more, all eight circles are filled with black dots. When the time arrives, the watch makes audible beeps. And when the time has passed the circles scroll on the screen.
The student will soon learn that “8 black dots” is a long time, and “2 black dots” is not too long to wait. One black dot: better get ready!
Using the Quarter Hour Watch
- Choose a picture or symbol that symbolises the event. You can use any label or symbol system for pictures: PCS, WordWise, photographs, cut outs from magazines, etc.
- Place the picture on the supplied impact resistant plastic “picture” card chip (about the size of a 35 mm slide)
- Set the start time on a black disposable clock face insert, by punching out the time on the insert and clip it on the back of the picture card.

With the Quarter Hour Watch, developmentally delayed individuals may gradually, and at their own speed, learn how to manage time related events. The most elementary use – how to use the device to be on time – might slowly but surely develop into use for planning in the time dimension.
The Quarter Hour Watch is small, robust and operates on 3 AAA alkaline batteries. It comes with 5 picture cards, 20 disposable clock face inserts, and carry case.
It is also available in red, black and blue colours. Please contact Spectronics if a version with these optional colours is required.
