The Aim
The S.S.P.I.D.E.R. handbook (Symbol Systems and Peer Interaction Developing an Educational Resource) is a practical resource for people working in schools. It is concerned with helping to improve interaction between children using communication devices and their speaking peers.
Which children has the handbook been designed for?
- Children aged seven and above
- Children in mainstream or special schools
- Children with an identified discrepancy between their understanding of language and their ability to express themselves
- Children who have perceived difficulties in interacting with their peers
- Children who use an established communication device involving pictures/symbols/written words
- Children with physical disabilities
Although this handbook is designed for children with physical disabilities who use communication devices, the activities described, and the use of graphics symbols in learning and play, may benefit other children with learning and communication needs.
