Step Up to Math by Anne Marie Johnson, B.S. Ed., M.Ed. introduces students to a variety of fundamental skills necessary for solid maths comprehension.
Step Up to Math includes activities that precede numeration and quantitative concepts. The worksheets and activities cover the following topics:
- Understanding same/different
- Recalling and repeating three digits
- Ordering objects by graduated size
- Identifying simple patterns
The worksheets begin at a basic level and gradually increase in difficulty, building the students’ skills and confidence along the way. The book uses Picture Communication Symbols in all of the pre-maths activities. The symbols are appropriate for a wide variety of age and learning levels.
In addition to worksheets, there are a variety of carry-over activities that emphasise fine-motor skills, gross-motor skills, and generalisation skills. These pre-maths activities will help students transition to basic maths by providing a strong foundation in concepts that will increase the understanding of number concepts.
