Background
Cooking is a significant tool for teaching across all curriculum areas. It is a life skill appropriate to all ages and stages. This book is written as an Inclusive Curriculum for all students.
Cooking can be used at home and school to encourage students to develop new skills through ‘functional curriculum’ and as a fun activity for everyone involved.
The word ‘communicate’ includes verbal and non-verbal communication. Students may use a range of augmentative communication systems (photos, Compic, Boardmaker, gesture, print, sign, PECS, communication devices etc.)
Why cooking?
Cooking is an activity families, schools, community groups and indeed anyone can do and it provides long-term recreation and teaches independent living skills. Through cooking you can teach all curriculum areas as outlined in the Teaching Manual.
Why undertake a cooking programme?
By providing a structured programme with goals/learning outcomes you can develop a cooking programme that addresses the learning style and needs of the individual student. One child may use the programme to learn to read while another may use it to communicate, using signing or visual communication.
