Students discover how words work through systematic sequential phonics instruction
WordMaker was developed in close collaboration with Dr. Patricia Cunningham, founder and author of Systematic Sequential Phonics They Use and The Four-Blocks Literacy Model. Using varied activities, WordMaker provides a systematic and interactive approach to teaching word attack and spelling skills.
WordMaker draws on Dr. Cunningham’s research, classroom experience and successful approach to teaching systematic phonics and spelling. The program provides phonics, phonemic-awareness, spelling activities, individualised instruction and extended practice for students who struggle or need computer access. Your students will discover how words come together, which will make them successful spellers and readers!
Benefits for Students
- Increase decoding skills by manipulating letters, onsets and rhymes to learn new patterns in meaningful contexts
- Learn phonetically irregular words, or sight words, through word walls
- Are challenged with unknown words to prove they can transfer new learning
Benefits for Teachers
- Provide independent practice to further enhance instruction
- Built-in data collection drives formative assessment and decisions about instruction and intervention
- Use formative assessment tools to support multi-tiered intervention
- Provide students with physical disabilities access to grade-level phonics instruction and practice
How Does It Work?
- Students drag letters to blanks, then click the checkmark to get feedback
- Using a pool of letters, students make many different words using various letter combinations
- Students hear an auditory prompt to make a word (auditory prompt directs students to make words and give corrective feedback as needed)
- Students receive word walls of the words they have mastered.
